Shine

Here is a mixed-media painting I did yesterday, "Shine." I have been watching my Suzi Blu portrait workshop videos and decided to try to do a full Suzi-style painting :) Instead of using paper and colored pencil, I wanted to see if I could translate some of the techniques to canvas and acrylic paint. As you can tell this isn't my usual style of face. Next time I am going to try to incorporate some of the shading techniques to my own style of faces.

I had a lot of fun making a huge mess and adding this and that to the painting. I must say that there is something very freeing about mixed-media--almost anything goes! I'm not sure how much of it I will do in the future, but I really wanted to try it since its something I have been a little afraid of.

I painted her face and hair with acrylics, then added graphite, inks, rub-ons, stamps, paper butterflies, and fine gold glitter. I finally got to try out the Distress Inks which I got for my birthday--I loved them! I probably could have added a little more to the background, but I was afraid of going overboard.

I must say I am quite pleased with the shading of the face, I really like the way Suzi teaches it! I would highly recommend taking her workshops if you haven't already.

I had a ton of fun with this--we'll see how I am able to incorporate some of this into my regular paintings. I have this painting listed in my shop if anyone is interested :) UPDATE: She is actually going to the 50 Under 150 show at Borealis Arts! However if anyone is interested in purchasing feel free to contact me and we can make it happen :)

I hope you are all having a great week!

  2. Love this new approach. You've shown great understanding of transferring other's technique to your own work. Will be looking foward to more of your new work.

I have some questions re your acrylic technique and thought it would be more appropriate to email my questions to you. Hope you don't mind.

Great work and keep going! :D

  4. I'm trying to come up with a word other than "beautiful"... but I can't seem to. Because she is BEAUTIFUL. Period.

  5. This is just gorgeous!!! This is one of those pieces I missed during my move and subsequent internet loss!

I have to admit, I'm probably one of the few who think Suzi's work is nice, but I don't go ga-ga over it...this, on the otherhand, is drool worthy, My Dear!! Gorgeous...I just have to say it again!
